Your local plasterer
Good plastering is mostly the part you never see. It means checking what’s sound, preparing the wall, protecting the room and putting the right material on the right surface. Get that right and the finish takes care of itself. Rush it and you get cracks, blown patches and a wall that shows every flaw once it’s painted.
DM Plastering is run by David McCrorie, who has been plastering for over 13 years. David comes out to look at the job, gives you a free written quote and is involved from the first call to the finished wall. The work isn’t passed on to sub-contractors, and there are no hidden costs or call-out charges.

Gateshead has a bit of everything: Tyneside flats and Victorian terraces in Bensham, Saltwell and Teams, bigger older houses in Low Fell, inter-war and post-war semis right across the borough, and plenty of newer estates and extensions besides.
Older properties bring older problems, like plaster that has lost its grip on the brickwork and lath and plaster ceilings that have started to sag. Houses from the 1960s to the 1980s often have Artex on the ceilings. Newer homes and extensions need flat walls, crisp corners and a finish that looks right once the lights go in. Whatever you’ve got, you’ll get an honest view of what it needs.

Reviews
Summarised in our own words from reviews customers have left for DM Plastering. First names only, as the customers gave them.
Our landing and hallways now have a really smooth, professional finish. The work area was kept clean and tidy throughout, and the job was finished on time.
Turned up exactly when he said he would, plastered the room to a very good standard, and left everything as he found it. I’d use DM again and recommend them to anyone.
Reliable, friendly and hard-working. We’re really pleased with how it turned out and would happily recommend DM to anyone looking for a quality plasterer.

FAQs
The things people ask most before booking a plasterer. If yours isn’t here, call 07738 054051 and ask David directly.
It depends on the size of the room, whether the walls need a skim or a full re-plaster back to the brick, whether ceilings are included and how easy the access is. We don’t publish a price list, because a figure given without seeing the job would only mislead you. We’ll come and look instead, and give you a free written quote with no obligation. There are no hidden costs or call-out charges added on.
A skim is a thin finishing coat, usually 2 to 3mm, applied over plaster or plasterboard that is still sound. Re-plastering means taking the old plaster off back to the brick or block, then building the wall up again with a backing coat and a finish. If your existing plaster is blown, hollow or crumbling, a skim over it won’t last, so we always check before recommending one or the other.
It depends on the size of the room and the work involved. A skim on a typical room can often be done in a day, while a full re-plaster takes longer because the backing coat has to set before the finish goes on. You’ll know how long your job will take when you get your quote.
As a rough guide, a skim coat takes a few days to a week to dry, and thicker backing coats take longer. It depends on the weather, the heating and the ventilation. New plaster turns from dark pink or brown to an even pale pink once it’s dry. Let it dry naturally rather than blasting it with heaters, keep the room ventilated, and use a mist coat of watered-down emulsion as the first coat of paint so it soaks in and grips.
Yes. Covering a textured ceiling is usually better than removing it: the surface is sealed with a bonding coat and then skimmed smooth, which leaves the old coating safely sealed in. Artex applied before 2000 can contain asbestos, so it should never be sanded or scraped. If you want it removed completely, it needs testing first.
Yes. Plenty of older Gateshead houses still have lath and plaster ceilings. Sound sections can be patched, and a ceiling that’s cracked or sagging can be overboarded with new plasterboard or taken down and reboarded, then skimmed. We’ll look at yours and tell you which makes sense.

It helps to clear as much as you can. Anything that can’t be moved is covered, and floors are protected before work starts. Plastering is messy by nature, so the mess is kept contained and the room is left clean and tidy at the end.
